What is the explanation for Luke 14:25-33?

luke 14:25-33

The book of Luke 14:25-33 is in the new testament, among the four Gospel books. It entails the redemption of discipleship to human beings and the power of the cross. The book has twenty-four chapters detailing the sacrifices for discipleship.

Jesus was a good teacher, teaching His disciples with a statement hard enough for them to fathom. The report is a metaphor which He clarifies in verse 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters, his own life then he cannot be my disciple”.

Love Jesus Christ before Everything

Becoming a disciple is forsaking the flesh to follow Jesus Christ. The verse lists all the people closest to you and related by blood. We must hate all these people or separate ourselves to follow Christ. Discipleship needs sacrifice.

However, Jesus did not mean that we should show hatred or despise to our parents or families. No. The cost of following Christ is leaving behind all that you love and sounds essential to you for Christ.

The word “hate” means to love less. Your love for God must surpass that of your immediate family. The same context is in Matthew 19:29 says, “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life”.

The commitment to follow and abide in Christ has a high price to pay. Can you bear the cost? Following Christ has a cost to pay and also good returns in the end. Therefore, be ready to forsake all earthly things and focus on Jesus Christ.

When you put your hope in God, all you need and more is at your disposal. Matthew 6: 33 demonstrates it clearly. “But seek ye the kingdom of God first, and everything shall be added unto you”.

What is the explanation for Luke 14:25-33

Pharisees saw Jesus as a competition

Jesus was a Jew and whatever he taught was purely a Jewish affair. He addressed multitudes who wanted to follow him in Luke 14:25-33. The teaching is actual even today for anyone interested in following Christ.

From Verse 25, He was talking to the multitudes who followed him. The statement is straightforward that for you to become his follower, then you need to turn away from anyone and everything dear to you. 27 further tells you to bear the cross of Christ and follow Him.

28 is where you are reminded that you must make plans before beginning a project. Count costs and ensure you have all that is necessary to complete it. 29 is the outcome of a project without proper planning. It is a fail. So, don’t take on the journey of Christ and give up on the way. You must have a plan to go all the way.

30 make excellent plans for every project you decide to take on to avoid frustrations or half-done work. 31 gives an example of a King who has to go to war. If the opponent is more armed with more men to fight your team, then what happens?

32 Don’t wait for them to approach. The King sends a delegation to meet them far off to call a truce. 33 In short, whoever is not ready to give up everything for Christ Jesus, then they cannot be disciples.

Luke 14:25-33 is a direct address to people who only see Jesus as an example to follow. The statement is clear for anyone who wants to follow Him knows the cost they have to bear to qualify to be a disciple. Most people viewed Jesus as a teacher and not a saviour.

Following Jesus meant that one had to be thrown out of the synagogue which no one could bear. It is for this reason that Jesus asked people to forsake family to follow him. For most, it is a heavy price to pay when one decides to follow Christ. Also, the commitment to make this sacrifice is a clear indication of pure love for Christ Jesus.
