On “In My Blood,” Shawn Mendes takes a heavier and more mature approach production-wise, while still sticking to his acoustic roots in the verses. The day before the release he tweeted a message to his fans saying:
This song is the closest song to my heart that I’ve ever written.
In a tweet Shawn posted the day before he released “In My Blood,” he wrote:
Just wanted to write this note before the song comes out tonight and say how excited I am for you all to hear it. I know I’ve been pretty quiet during this album process and I just wanted to thank you with all of my heart for being there and supporting me the entire time. This song is the closest song to my heart that I’ve ever written and I Hope you guys love it and all the new music coming your way. I love and appreciate you all so much! Thank you!
In an interview with Zane Lowe, Mendes opened up about how the song details his experiences with anxiety:
It was kind of something that hit me last year. Growing up, I was a pretty calm kid. I knew people who suffered from anxiety, found it kind of hard to understand, and then when it hits you, you’re like, Oh my god, this is crazy. When I play that song, I go ‘Just so you know I’m okay. The best thing about it is that it’s not all down. The whole reason I wrote the song was to be like, at the very end, ‘It’s not in my blood to do that.’
