Is Rey Luke Skywalker’s Daughter? The Truth!

Is Rey Luke Skywalker’s Daughter? Here are the facts…

Rey Skywalker? Not your typical Father-Daughter relationship. Also, suggest Kylo Ren and Rey are related?

There are as many theories about Rey’s identity as there are daddy issues in the Star Wars films. According to who you talk to, Rey is a Kenobi, a Solo, an Organa (as in, Leia’s adoptive family), or the reincarnation of Anakin Skywalker himself (read here). Yeppie!!!.

But by far the most popular theory so far is that Rey is secretly Luke Skywalker’s daughter. As #TheForceAwakens‘ main protagonist and the new hero being the last Jedi, Rey’s journey certainly does parallel Luke’s, but is there more to their connection than this?

HELL FREAKING YES according to this Redditor (and many other fans, to be fair), and his theory claims to put all the others to bed. So let’s check it out!

Here is Every Shred Of Evidence.

You can go ahead and read the full theory here, but seeing as it’s pretty long we thought we’d break it down into the main points for you. Aren’t we nice?

According to the author (Con0rr) Rey has several characteristics which seem to be innate to Skywalkers…

– She is extremely strong in the force “Without any training”, able to perform a mind trick almost perfectly when under a high stress situation.

– She is a phenomenal pilot, a trait that was present in her grandfather, and her father. “You have that power too.” – in more ways than one.

Here are the main clues which this theory takes as conclusive evidence enough that Rey is a Skywalker.

  1. The lightsaber called to her.
  2. Maz Kanata’s hint that “the belonging you seek is ahead”.
  3. Kylo Ren knows who Rey is — in the novel he mutters “it is you…”
  4. The lightsaber flies to Rey in the final battle.
  5. Luke’s narration for the second trailer implies he’s talking to his child — “I have it, my sister has it… you have that power too.”
  6. Luke seemed emotional when Rey found him at the end.

The Reddit theory misses out another big clue: Rey dreams about Luke’s island home before she even knows he’s alive, as Kylo Ren sensed.

“At night, desperate to sleep… you imagine an ocean. I see it. I see the island.”

Con0rr also maps out Rey’s backstory from the hints we got in The Force Awakens.

Rey Skywalker: Secret Jedi

Con0rr’s theory states that Rey lived with Luke Skywalker for the first few years of her life, and her legacy caused young Ben Solo to become jealous. This could explain why Snoke was able to corrupt Ben Solo to the Dark Side.

“As Ben was growing up he would begin having temptations from Snoke. Become jealous of Rey’s attention for being “The daughter of the great Jedi”. Kylo would find his comfort in his grandfather. Be told stories of his power by Snoke.”

Con0rr theorizes that Rey joined Luke’s Jedi academy at 5 years old. Han and Leia soon sent Ben to train too, because his “severe mental struggles” are causing him to lash out at them. Apparently, he constantly talked about how Darth Vader was right, and how “the Dark Side isn’t a phase, mom!”

(Alright, I made that last bit up.)

When he gets to the academy, Ben is outperformed by the other Jedi students and continues to resent Rey even though she is nice to him.

Massacring The Jedi, Kidnapping Rey…

Naturally, the only logical thing to for Ben to do is join the Knights of Ren and massacre all those talented children.

“They burn the place to the ground. Slaughtering children. Even kidnapping children for Snoke to use. They find a little girl under some rubble. Terrified and screaming and crying for her father. Another KoR begins to attempt to murder her. He is then killed before he can follow through, by Kylo Ren himself. (This scene is even in the flashback)”

Interesting… except I must correct Con0rr on one small point: The scene he’s referring to isn’t actually the Jedi temple massacre. This was revealed by Lucasfilm story exec Pablo Hidalgo.

But let’s just gloss over that.

Kylo Ren then kidnaps Rey and takes her to Jakku, banishing her. And this is when the theory gets a little woolly, because the novelization implies that Rey is left on Jakku by her parents.

“I’ll come back for you sweetheart, I promise.”

Con0rr argues that by the time the film was released the writers had decided that Kylo Ren left Rey on Jakku, but they didn’t bother to alter the official novelization. You know, the one that’s canon. That seems to be a pretty big oversight — Lucasfilm, Con0rr’s on to you!

That’s about it for the main points of the theory. If you really want to read the rest here it is, and Con0rr certainly makes a persuasive argument. He’s also broken down all the counter-arguments (eg: Rey isn’t related to anyone we know) and argued why they don’t make sense.

Personally, I’m not 100% sure that this proof is conclusive. It’s true that there are some clues and hints in The Force Awakens that Rey is a Skywalker, but most of them are parallels between her story and the other main protagonists’. To me, that just proves she’s the saga’s new hero, but the saga has always focused on Skywalkers…

Yeah, we’re going around in circles.
