Most of the time, the error will be caused by a change in the network’s proxy settings of your Windows. The change of settings could be a result of an infection, file corruptions or change in system files and network settings. We will take you through the Windows network’s proxy settings and the steps to repair this error.

Step 1: Reboot Your Computer and Router

Before you start any troubleshooting, it is always best to restart your equipment and there is a chance the error will disappear after a few moments. Since the error is as a result of some misconfigured settings on the computer, restarting the router might not sort out the issue but it is still important to ensure you eliminate any chance of network problems. If the problem persists, continue with the following steps.

Step 2: Review Proxy Settings in Windows

Since the issue is related to your Windows Network’s proxy settings, it is sensible to check these settings first. For you to access proxy settings in Windows 10, first open the Settings, select the Network and Internet category and switch to the Proxy tab from the left sidebar. There will be a list of options related to the proxy servers. For most home users, you do not use a proxy and therefore, you must ensure the Use a proxy server slider is off. Ensure the Automatically detect settings is on.

For the users using a proxy, the system administrator should make sure the proxy details are correct. After this, try reconnecting to the network again and if there is still an error, turn the Automatically detect settings off and try again.

Step 3: Run the Network Adapter Troubleshooter

Right-click on the network connection icon and choose to troubleshoot. This will run the internet connection troubleshooter that will show “Windows could not detect proxy settings” error. However, there is another way to troubleshoot to ensure you get more help. All you will need to do is open Settings and visit Update and Security, then Troubleshoot. Find the Network Adapter in the list and follow the instructions. If this does not assist you, then follow the next step.

Step 4: Auto-Obtain an IP Address and DNS

Go to Settings then Network and Internet then Status. Click on the Change adapter options button on the list to see all your network connections then double-click on the one you are using. Click the Properties button and double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 in the list. Ensure you have both Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically selected. Any settings that are misconfigured will tamper with your internet connectivity.

Step 5: Update or Roll Back your Network Driver

Outdated network drivers may lead to connectivity issues. For you to update or replace a botched update, you will need to right-click on the Start Button and choose Device Manager, then expand the Network Adapters section and double-click on the connection you use. The Driver tab will pop up and you should choose Roll Back Driver to uninstall the latest update or go back to the previous one. Choose Update Driver and check for updates on the internet.

If you follow these steps, you should be able to solve the “Windows could not automatically detect this network’s proxy settings” error
