Effects of online casino on regular in-house casinos

For many casinos, it might have felt like they were approaching an end of an era when online casinos became increasingly popular which undoubtedly had an impact on land-based casinos.

Online casino

In 2020, the number of players enjoying slots has never been higher and in fact, the relaxation of gambling laws over in the UK 15 years ago has meant that players are freer to access their favourite online casino games both in brick and mortar casinos as well as online casinos.

This essentially created a more open and safer gambling industry who would be held to account for any irresponsible activities as well as the internet making gambling more accessible than ever before.

Although it might be easy to presume that because online casinos have skyrocketed in popularity that this must mean that land-based casinos are suffering as a result of the business being taken away from them, this is far too much of a simplified view to a complex market.

Evidently, it’s not just online casinos which are experiencing market growth, land-based casinos are also experiencing unprecedented popularity worldwide as they continue to diversify and adapt to new technology and gambling trends.

However, the online market has undeniably had an effect on in-house casinos, but how much of an effect has the surge in popularity in the online casino had on their land-based counterparts, and is there much of a crossover?

Increased female players and less negative stigma associated with gambling

One of the top effects of online casinos on regular land-based casinos is that there an increased number of female players in both online and land-based casinos which can in part be attributed to an increase in advertising casino gambling on daytime TV and social media which has helped to de-stigmatize gambling and therefore attracting even more players.

Following the change in gambling laws in 2005, there has been a change in how gambling has been perceived and land-based casinos are now more than ever viewed as a brilliant night out and a great source of entertainment as well as online casinos being seen as a great way to pass the time.

The rise of the slot game

Slots are one of the most popular games to play in the casino and players just can’t seem to get enough of them. It’s easy to see the attraction – fast-paced, thrilling, fun and simple to play, who wouldn’t want to play? Not to mention the huge jackpots on offer, it’s no wonder players choose to play slots regularly via their mobiles, tablets and laptops. The popularity of online slots has driven growth significantly and the more players, the bigger the pool of jackpot prizes available to be won on progressive jackpot slots which can often be upwards of £1m.

Slots are more popular online as the RTP is generally higher, reaching around 97% in comparison with a land-based slot machine which is generally around the 85% RTP mark. So whilst overall online casinos aren’t causing land-based casinos to be less popular, slot players, in particular, opt to play online rather than in land-based casinos as they have greater winning potential with online slot as well as a much greater choice of game.
